Protection of species

Detection of exotic and protected animal species

In the EU, trading with exotic and protected animal species underlies strong restrictions and bans. Also included in the comprehensive legal regulations on species protection are take-along gifts from holidays and souvenirs made of protected animal species.

So far, the following exotic or protected animal species can be detected by means of a method developed by the IME:

  • Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata)
  • Yellow-footed tortoise (Geochelone denticulata)
  • Viscacha (Lagostomus maximus)
  • Lesser Kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis)
  • Pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea)
  • Squirrel monkey (Saimir sp.)
  • Brazilian porcupine (Coendou prehensilis)
  • Short-eared elephant-shrews (Macroscelides proboscideus)
  • Banded mongoose ( Mungos mungo)
  • Ferret (Mustela putorius furo)
  • White-fronted marmoset (Callithrix geoffroyi)
  • Striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis)
  • Wild boar (Sus scrofa)
  • Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata)
  • Gelada (Theropithecus gelada)
